If you've found it challenging to engage with dads, you're not alone. Many practitioners and service providers have struggled, with some even giving up entirely. But forming meaningful connections with dads is simpler—and more beneficial—than you might think.
It's now well recognised just how crucial a father’s role is in shaping a child's future. A supportive dad can significantly improve a child's school performance, help them build close friendships, boost their confidence, and strengthen their self-esteem. And when dads are empowered as caregivers, the benefits extend beyond the child to mothers, families, and society as a whole.
More dads than ever are putting family first and actively sharing caregiving responsibilities. In 2023, nearly half (46%) of the 1,000 dads we surveyed in our annual survey were spending 25 hours per week playing with their children or helping them learn—a stark contrast to the mere 35 minutes per week spent by fathers in the 1970s. These numbers continue to rise year after year.
Yet, despite this significant shift, outdated stereotypes of dads as mere breadwinners persist. As a result, dads are often unintentionally overlooked by services. But far from being an extra burden on already stretched practitioners, these engaged fathers offer a remarkable opportunity. They not only provide crucial support within the family but can also lighten your workload—becoming an invaluable asset in the process.
