DADx Series: Tackling Inequalities

Discover how partnerships between the third sector and statutory services are helping to break the cycle of inequality for fathers in both rural and urban settings.

DADx Series: Tackling Inequalities

This two-part DADx series - Tackling Inequalities - will explore how services can better support fathers being pushed to the edge of our communities, particularly those facing severe disadvantage. Each event will spotlight recent case studies demonstrating the power of collaboration and how third sector and statutory services are creating innovative solutions to ensure dads most in need aren’t overlooked.

Rural Dads Facing Multiple Barriers

This session - the second in our two-part 'Tackling Inequalities' series - focused on fathers living in rural communities; dads who can often be furthest from support while navigating pressures that may go unseen or unheard.

As mental health concerns continue to rise across the UK, rural life can bring unique and heightened challenges. In Scotland, where male suicide rates and deaths of despair remain amongst the highest in Europe, many rural communities continue to carry a disproportionate burden.

Together with Home-Start Caithness, NHS Highland, DadPad and more, we explored the inspiring work taking place across the Highlands to reach and support fathers, showing that building vital support networks ensures that no dad is ever truly out of reach.

New Dads in Deprived Communities

In our first session, we are focusing on Tayside. Dundee City experiences some of the most severe health inequalities in Scotland. Men in deprived communities experience disproportionately high rates of suicide, drug-related deaths, homelessness, criminal justice involvement, and untreated mental health conditions.

Fatherhood can provide men with the drive necessary to make healthier choices. However, becoming a dad can also increase the risk of poor mental health and a tendency towards unhealthy behaviours as a means of coping.

To explore how we can better support these fathers, we are joined by Newfield Medical Group, YMCA Tayside, and Dads Rock, who will share how they are building networks and tailored interventions to meet the complex needs of dads in the city demonstrating that even in the face of deep-rooted inequality, no dad should be left to navigate these challenges alone.
